As one of Southern New England’s leading employment agencies, Stewart Staffing can tell you that work relationships can have a big impact on your career success. So if you have a colleague who doesn’t seem to care for you, is there a way you can get on their good side without kissing up? Here are some tips to help you.

Get to know colleagues.

It sounds like a no brainer. But if you haven’t invested any time in getting to know a colleague, they may simply be treating you cordially, rather than coldly. If you want to win them over, learn about their life. Ask how their weekend was. Inquire about their kids. Find out about hobbies outside of the office to see if you share any common interests.

Make an effort to be approachable.

It’s easy to go through an entire workday without smiling at a single colleague. But doing so on a regular basis will earn you a reputation of being unapproachable. So make an effort to be friendly. Say “good morning” or “hello” when you see colleagues rather than just simply rushing past them. Also, ask people how they’re doing and really listen to their answers.

Just say “no” to negativity.

Don’t gossip or make negative comments about work colleagues. Doing so is a fast way to create office drama and tension, which will undermine your workplace relationships. However, when a colleague does a good job or comes through unexpectedly, be sure to thank and praise them.

Change your approach for each person.

Some people like to chat for a few minutes before talking business. Others are more direct and want to get right down to it. When you change your approach depending on the style of each person you’re communicating with, you’ll have better results.

If issues persist, ask why.

If you have a colleague who continually gives you the cold shoulder, confront them. Simply saying something along the lines of: “Did I do something to upset you?” can help you deal with the situation without coming across as too hostile.

No matter what, it’s important to build positive workplace relationships with all colleagues – even those you don’t care for or who don’t care for you. So while you don’t need to be best friends with your co-workers, you do need to invest the time and effort into establishing productive relationships. It will benefit you in the end.
